Subaru Outback

with 2.5 engine and 6M I can get 35M/G when drive at 60M/H, it only gets 29M/G at 75, should still better than the 4Runner, but 4Runner is more powerful. 

The Subaru 4 wheel drive is great too. It's standard on all models and better than TOYOTA's on ice and sand. But 4Runner is better when there is no road at all, however, you may need to own a ranch to find such a place.

I got the outback at $22k, 4Runner will cost much more.
