DETECTIVES have charged a suspected member of a sex trafficking syndicate with murder over the brutal 2009 death of Melbourne man Abraham Papo, who was allegedly killed while attempting to help a Korean prostitute.

Papo, 27, died after being struck repeatedly with a tyre lever outside a South Melbourne brothel in February 2009, following an altercation with brothel employee De Jun ''Kevin'' Zheng.

The initial police investigation into Papo's death did not lead to any criminal charges after Zheng told police he had had acted in self-defence when he had struck Papo and that Papo had earlier attempted to steal phones and money from the brothel.

Last year, information uncovered by The Age was used by Papo family barrister Julian McMahon to ask authorities to reopen the inquiry into Papo's death. The information exposed Zheng's alleged role as a member of an international sex trafficking syndicate for whom Papo's girlfriend had worked. The Age's investigation also exposed how the alleged trafficking syndicate was operating under the noses of authorities in licensed brothels in Melbourne and Sydney and may have trafficked dozens of women into Australia, where they were forced to pay off ''debts'' by working as prostitutes.

The second police inquiry into Papo's death was led by detective Michael Cashman of the arson squad, who was already investigating Zheng over his suspected involvement in the firebombing of a brothel in 2010. The second probe is understood to have found important new evidence.
