这个问题有意思，谈几句浅识：

1）据我所知，艺术大师 （mater）不是一种职称，头衔，也不是一种严格的荣誉奖赏，有点 outdated，但仍被使用，是群体对所公认的影响力较大的艺术家的尊称和荣誉，也可以是个人的尊称，所以定义不那么严格，一般为他人所用，不太作为自己所用的称呼。

2）即使是 称呼“professional artist ” 也有些 consideration， 有的 ”专业 ” 艺术家不愿意别人称自己为 professional artist， 我碰到过。在一次艺展的交谈中，我对一位 art professor说了一句 “you are a professional artist”， 她马上对我说："I am just an artist； you don't have to say professional artist. "   我好奇她的 sensitivity，又问，你以此为职业，而且资格那么老，称专业艺术家有什么问题呢？ 她回答说：" The word -- professional -- is not easy to define. It might offend people who are very talented and skillful in art, but may not have art degrees. "  我想了半天，觉得这话也有道理，至少出发点是为他人着想，生怕 hurt 了其他艺术家的 feeling。不过这也只算是个人的认知和选择吧。
