Well, you could have done even better by asserting that your forced entry was well-intentioned and necessary due to some rather unusal circumstances:
1) You spotted some pedophile casing on the house in question.
2) You decided to act as a good samaritan, and entered the house in hopes of trapping the pervert.
3) Before you had a chance to bring your plan to fruition, the housewife returned, scaring away the evil-doer.
4) Not wanting to be misunderstood and hoping that the housewife might leave the house again soon, you hastily hid yourself under the bed.
5) Once discovered, you dashed out to make a desperate pursuit of the escaping true "criminal."

Now, you are not only a free man, but also a hero who risked his life to save others.
