Per Wikipedia;
“Drawn in the same group in the first round, Hungary and West Germany already met in the group stage. Hungary easily won this match on a 8–3 scoreline. However, as Germany would have to re-play Turkey in a play-off game, German coach Herberger fielded a reserve team. These players were not able to weather the Hungarian prowess, but by not fielding the strongest eleven, Herberger managed to obscure the real strength of the German team.”
----German strategy
“In the 8-3 victory game over Germany, the Hungarian team captain, Ferenc Puskás, suffered an ankle injury after a tackle by Werner Liebrich and did not return until the final. Nevertheless, even without him playing the Magyars beat Brazil and Uruguay, the runners-up and winners of the 1950 World Cup in the quarter final and semi final, respectively. Thus, they had reached the Final, to be played at Berne's Wankdorf Stadium.”
---Hungary was still dominant without their captain
“Big drama surrounded Ferenc Puskás' fitness. On everyone's mind and the great exhilerating question of the tournament now became whether Puskás was fully able to play naturally injury-free. It was most often queried by the press, and reports vacillated back and forth on whether the great star's ankle had healed properly.”
----Was he injury prone?
“Puskás played the entire 1954 World Cup final against West Germany, although he was not fully fit. Despite this, he scored his fourth goal of the tournament to put Hungary ahead after six minutes.”
-----He did play the final match.
Limited by my poor research skill, I couldn’t find further information regarding to this “德国替补队员在54年世界盃把匈牙利队长故意踢伤” claim. I know that Wikipedia is not the best source for facts. Can anybody provide the link or video to indicate that the German player hurt the Hungarian team captain intentionally?
