You should almost never listen to kids to get a dog. The dog will eventually become all your responsibilies.
feeding, cleaning, exercising, vet's bill, pet sitting while you are on vacation. It is a lot of work and can be expensive. Then the dog will get old and you will have to take care of a senior pet, and then he/she eventually will die before you, which is like losing a family member.
