You and I have both been there. You know how many papers are only used by the author/a small bunch of people to generate more grant money.
The rank and file of scientific community are full of shameless people who are delighted to publish any piece of shit they "discover."
When I wrote a paper(to be correct, even before I wrote one), I alway questioned, whether this was something relevant. But when I reviewed others papers, I found out not many cared for that.
It's one thing to make a living, it is another to have a sense of decency of oneself, that when you turn 70 or 80, you can tell your grand children proudly what you have done.
