What has the Giants done this season?

Some Pats fans start to question if the Giants could survive in AFC? Others think that the upset in Super Bowl game was nothing special. I gave highly respect and credits to what the Patriots have achieved this season. Well, I guess now, learned from the Patriots’ fans, that the Pats’ 16-0 perfect season doesn’t look remarkable anymore because the Giants prove to the world that the Patriots is beatable and the Patriots should be rated as 3-point underdog (how amazing hindsight is always 20/20).

Emotion aside, let me bring up the facts. The Giants have a regular season record 10-6 but only lost 1 game to AFC team. Which team? The New England Patriots by 3 points (38:35). They lost five games to the NFC teams. Could they survive in NFC playoff?

On their playoff run, the Giants beat NFC south Champion, Tampa Bay Buccaneers (league #1 defense and NFC #4 seed), NFC east Champion, Dallas Cowboys (league #2 offense and NFC #1 seed), NFC north Champion, Green Bay Packers (league #3 offense and NFC #2 seed) before they reached Super Bowl. In the last game, they beat the undefeated AFC champion, New England Patriots, led by league MVP Tom Brady (league #1 offense). Giants might be worst than all AFC teams but they accomplished one thing that all AFC teams dreamed to do but failed to do so in 12 opportunities, to defeat the Patriots.

Before the Super Bowl game, the Patriots patented the trademark 19-0. The Patriots’ president promised to FOX TV network not to blow out the Giants in the first half by saying that they will do their best to keep the score as close as possible in the first half. A book about how the Patriots set a perfect NFL 19-0 record was published. New York Giants? They were buried by the media and were dead meat already. If you don’t think that the Super Bowl victory shocked the world, you are calmer than Eli.

I am an atheist but I believe in football God. The Almighty paved the Giants’ playoff run as a “revenge journey”. The Giants lost the season opener to Dallas Cowboys, then Green Bay Packers in the second game. They closed up their regular season with a loss to New England Patriots. During the postseason, the Giants defeated them all in the same order.

Here come the interesting facts. After beating Green Bay Packers and New England Patriots in back to back championship games, the Giants earned a spot in 3-Super Bowl-championship club, whose current members are Green Bay Packers, New England Patriots, and Washington Redskins, respectively. The Giants started their season 0-2. They played the Redskins in the third week. The Redskins outplayed the Giants in the first half and led by the score 17-3. For some reasons, the Giants suddenly woke up in the second half and came back to win the game 24-17. The victory jump-started the unbelievable Giants Cinderella season.

It looks like “4” is the magic number for the G-men. The Giants won 4 consecutive postseason games to clinch the title. With the Sunday’s victory, the Giants become the 4th member of the three-Super Bowl-Championship club. They denied Bill Bellichek from wearing his 4th Super Bowl ring as head coach this season and prevented the Patriots from beating the NY teams the 4th time (the Patriots beat NY team three times this season already, 2 times the Jets, 1 time the Giants). Eli Manning outplayed 4 pro bowl quarterbacks, Jeff Garcia, Tony Romo, Brett Favre, and Tom Brady, respectively.

Bill Parcells led the Giants to win their first Super bowl in his 4th season being the Giants coach in 1986. Jim Fassel brought the Giants into Super bowl in his 4th season being the Giants coach in 2000. In 2007, Tom Coughlin guided the Giants to win Super Bowl XLII, also in his 4th season being the Giants HC. Will Tom win the 4th Super Bowl for New York soon(grin)?

History tends to repeat itself. In 1991, nobody gave a chance to the underdog Giants as they faced the power house, Buffalo Bills, led by Jim Kelly and Thurman Tomas, but the Giants upset them 20:19. 17 years later, two 1990 super bowl Giants team assistant coaches played against each other in Super Bowl XLII. The underdog Tom Coughlin Giants, proved the football “experts” wrong again, by beating the red hot Bill Bellichek Patriots 17:14.

Though Randy Moss was an exceptional receiver, he has only been to the Championship game three times. In 2000 season, he was with powerful Minnesota Vikings but the Giants blew them out 41:0 in NFC championship game. Randy Moss was pissed and said that they were not going to win a championship. He quitted the team and the team sent him to the Raiders. He came to the Patriots and had minimum contribution in the AFC championship game. He caught a TD in super bowl XLII but still jinx the team to lose at the end. His return to the Patriots next season is questionable.

Eli Manning became the second quarterback to lead the team to victory when trailing behind in the 4th quarter in Super Bowl history. The first one was Joe Montana. He threw the winning TD against the Bengals with 34 seconds left on the clock in 1988. Eli did it with 35 seconds left.
