Let me start with their offensive line. It is amazing that they didn’t commit ONE false start penalty the whole post season though they played on road.
LT David Diehl was put in this position this year after the Giants released their starting LT to the Bucs. Drafted as a fifth rounder few years back, Diehl was backup to the right guard then started in RG later. However, Tom Coughlin drafted his son-in-law Chris Snee to play right guard and Diehl was moved to RT. His spot was soon replaced when the Giants signed Kareem McKenzie from the NY Jets. Diehl became a versatile backup again till this season. Every football fan knows how tough to play left tackle and all non-Giants football experts considered the Giants offensive line as a big concern for the offensive unit and Diehl was the weakest link this season.
LG Rich Seubert is a true warrior. He was signed to the Giants as a street free agent several years ago. He later broke his leg in a Philly game and forced out of football for two years. When everybody thought his football career was over, he worked hard and fought a way back to the Giants. It is the type of player who Tom Coughlin likes and he was welcome back to the team last year.
C Shaun O’Hara was graded as an average center. The Bills let him walk and he signed with the Giants 4 years ago. He turned out to be a solid player.
RG Chris Snee is Tom Coughlin’s son-in-law. He is a second rounder in 2004 and he plays consistently well since he was drafted.
RT Kareem McKenzie was abandoned by the Jets and became a reliable lineman in this unit.
The Giants star TE, Jeremy Shockey, was put on IR before the end of this season so the Giants was forced to play their fifth rounder TE, Kevin Boss, in the post season. Their FB Madison Hedgecock was signed off waiver this season, so was their starting kick returner.
Their starting RB Jacob Brandon, a fourth rounder last year, sat out the first 5 games in the regular season due to knee injury. Their backup RB Derrick Ward was out for the season once J. Brandon came back. The current backup RB Ahmad Bradshaw is a seventh rounder this year.
Their starting WR Plaxico Burgess played with a sprained ankle and a sprain knee throughout the season. He wasn’t sure if he could play in Super Bowl game because he aggregated his ankle during shower last Monday but he made it to the game and grabbed the winning TD.
Their slot WR Steve Smith is a second rounder this year but he injured his knee in a preseason game. He was forced out 14 games but he came back to contribute in the post season.
Their QB Eli Manning was bashed by the media and so-called football “experts” millions of times and already labeled as a first round bust.
To make the postseason run more impressive, the Giants had the banged up secondary (until Super Bowl) to face healthy opponents and they basically shut down star WRs, Joey Calloway, TO, and Randy Moss, respectively. It is the lineup what they have. Rookie CB Aaron Ross (first rounder this year), Kevin Dockery (street free agent), Geoffrey Pope (street free agent), RW McQuarter (a journey man), Old Sam Madison (dumped by the Dolphins), FS James Butler (street free agent), SS Gibril Wilson (fifth rounder), Michael Johnson (seventh rounder this year). A bunch of no names!
They were underdog for the most part of the season. Tom Coughlin was on the hot seat. The football “experts” kept writing them off. Nobody except the Giants fans will think that they can make it to Super Bowl but this Giants team refused to quit. They believed in themselves and there they are.
The Patriots scored record setting 589 points in the regular season while the Giants only gained 300 something points. It is the biggest point difference in Super Bowl history. While Tom Brady set the most TD pass this season, Eli Manning led the league with most intercepts and fumbles and a “bust”. If you don’t think that it is an “impossible mission”, what else?
Btw, our Mayor Bloomburg will start a parade in front of my office building tomorrow (battery park in case your don't know). I am gonna watch them in my eyes woohoo.
