The housing market is about 250-300% higher than where I live in. Daycare is 100% higher. Pre-school not free, etc.
So when they kept asking me about my range, I tried to be vague (saying compensate with experience and SBU local) until I was on site and the they gave me the application form to fill out (for HR documentation). Then, I gave a range.
Of course, I have done my research about national average pay and talked to some senior administrators in the field. So I gave a good range that I won't comprise the quality of my life, while still remain in the reasonable market price.
However, I turned down the offer because they couldn't relocate my hu*****and in a good position.
Good luck.
