Did unraveling sex-for-tuition pact end in Monument Valley murder-suicide? She was an aspiring Japanese musician. He was her mysterious benefactor - an older Chinese businessman who offered a salacious deal. Their story climaxed 11 months ago outside Utah's Monument Valley. There, authorities say, businessman Yu-Shung Lin pointed his sports-utility vehicle toward the edge of a cliff, pushed the accelerator and steered over the ledge to kill them both. A National Park Service report released this month ruled the case a murder-suicide - and described the sordid relationship that eventually took the couple over the cliff. It began in a Tokyo nightclub in 2006, when Lin met a 25-year-old trumpet player and modern jazz fan, Yuki Yoshida. Lin was a Chinese citizen with at least three aliases, according to the Park Service report. Investigators say he was wealthy and spent his money freely - although it's unclear how he earned a living. One acquaintance told investigators Lin worked in Tokyo real estate. Lin's sister said he was the "black sheep" of the family and "may have been involved in criminal enterprise," according to the report. Shortly after they met, the report said, Lin and Yoshida "began a romantic relationship with the understanding Lin would pay her expenses to attend music school in the U.S.A. in exchange for sexual favors." In August 2006, Yoshida enrolled in the prestigious Berklee College -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Advertisement -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- of Music in Boston. A college spokesman says Yoshida was a trumpet student who used transfer credits to enroll as a sophomore. Schoolmates said Yoshida described Lin as her "sponsor" who paid her school and living expenses, said William Tracy, a Boston police detective who investigated her life there. Yoshida soon began seeing a boyfriend she met at school, Tracy said. Her family knew nothing of her relationship with Lin, Tracy said, and thought Yoshida was working in Boston. "Apparently she was living a double life," Tracy said. Then in December, Lin visited the United States to meet Yoshida for what the Park Service described as a "traveling holiday." But something happened during the trip: Yoshida no longer wanted a relationship under the previous terms. Yoshida's Berklee friends told investigators she decided she no longer wanted to "engage in sexual activities and reneged on their agreement," the Park Service wrote. Investigators say Yoshida was sexually assaulted by Lin. Some photographs from the trip showed Yoshida trying to draw away from Lin, the Park Service said. Yoshida returned to Boston on Jan. 7, and Lin returned to Japan three days later. He then apologized to Yoshida, said he wanted to renegotiate their deal, and offered her $20,000 if she would meet him in Monument Valley, according to the Park Service. Yoshida agreed. The two met Jan. 13 in Las Vegas. Lin rented a white 2006 Ford Explorer, under the alias Lin Ushung, and arrived the next day in Monument Valley, staying the night at Goulding's Lodge just north of the Arizona state line. The Park Service says photographs and other circumstances indicate Lin may have sexually assaulted Yoshida again that night. On Jan. 15, Lin and Yoshida drove north to Muley Point, a plateau giving a fantastic view of the valley about 1,200 feet below. They arrived in the afternoon, parked the vehicle in a dirt lot facing the cliff, got out of the Explorer and looked around. The pair posed for photographs before returning to the SUV. No one saw what happened next. But investigators say tire tracks and other signs at the scene say Lin, with Yoshida in the passenger seat beside him, put the Explorer in gear and drove straight toward the cliff about 100 feet away. The SUV struck a small tree and bounced up and down on the sandstone, according to the report. Signs say Lin continued accelerating. The Explorer's doors and windows were locked. Investigators say it appears Yoshida's final moments were spent crawling from the front of the Explorer into the rear passenger seats. The SUV hurtled off the canyon rim, grazed a tree growing from the rock, then crashed head-first on a ledge about 60 feet below the canyon rim. The Explorer flipped onto the roof and came to rest on the ledge. It's believed Lin and Yoshida died instantly. A seasonal Park Service employee found the wreck 12 days later while hiking. There's no indication of how far in advance Lin planned the fatal drive. Investigators found $3,000 in travelers checks with Lin and Yoshida, and the Explorer was to be returned to the rental agent five days after the crash. The Park Service found no evidence Yoshida participated willingly. She was to return to Boston the day after she was killed. A Berklee spokesman said in an e-mail, "The college held a moving and cathartic memorial service for Yuki at the beginning of February, which was attended by members of her family, and her friends." The college declined to comment further. The Chinese Embassy in Washington, D.C., and the Japanese consulate in Denver both declined to comment on the case. "It looks like this guy came here and thought he had some kind of romantic involvement . . . and just went off the deep end," Tracy said.
