which career direction I should go, Please advice, Lao Tu etc

I am in optical communication field in 10 years, PhD in EE from China. Now still work in optical design R&D. There are 2.5 years experience in SVT(system verification test, similar to QA).

Has experienced lost job, stay at home in telecom downturn time. Because optical design job is not that much these days, it is not easy to find job if I lost current job. So I am worried. and thinking:

What I should learn to broaden my career area?
Should I go back to SVT which the job is more easy to find, but the job is too easy for a PhD.

Personally, I do not have manager's skill.
