We did not buy the snow chain, though many cars stopped at the gas station just 50 yds before the road block to purchase the chains. We decided if the trooper stopped us we would turn back but the trooper looked at our tires and said we could go. So we did.
The snow was very heavy but was towards the end of it. Luckily road to Reno was open and I-80 was open, so when we left Lake Tahoe 2 days later we took I-80 from Reno. (on way in we came from Sacremento).
