I think one'd need to go there several times and Oahu is a good starting point.

Search here and you will see lots of previous posts. But it is not a matter that can be detailed in a few sentences and you just have to do your own homework.

Buying a book or two would be very worthwhile. I bought one written by a local. Very detailed and helpful.

Please note that snorkeling is only the simpliest activity that you can/will do over there. Lots of more for you to take.
