Maui: 4 天 (Mt Haleakala is a must; you'll feel like being on Mars and you won't regret it; Also, snorkeling at Moloki by catamaren is unique experience besides the price )
Kuai: 3 天
Big island: 1 day (through inter-island flight)
So 10-12 days at least if you want to enjoy the whole of Hawaii vacation; think about it, otherwise, you have to spend more in air tickets.
Well, it is hard to arrange everything perfectly for the first time; and kids need more time to spend with. One of my friends went to Hawaii in year 2001; the only angry for me is he didn't tell others:))
