The Battle of Kursk was the first stage of "Operation Zitadelle". Frankson & Tamelander (2002) made a very detailed study of the Kursk battle, working on the project for years, comparing Russian and German sources made available after 1990. Their conclusion was that the Germans lost approx. 280 tanks and self-propelled guns while the Soviets lost between 1600 and 1900 tanks and self-propelled guns. These figures do not include the vehicles that were repaired. In terms of personnel losses, the ratio was approx. 3:1 in favour of the Germans.
The kill/losses ratio was also considerably more even in the northern sectors than the southern.
