What they can gain by attacking China? China was so poor in 1960-1972, (after that US was an ally) a lot of heavy equipment in Northeast China have been moved to USSR in 1945.

If you are a thief, the first thing you need to figure out is who is rich, who is poor. Otherwise you are wasting your time and energy.
