Questions about car rental

Anyone knows whether I can rent a car from the airport around 9pm and return it in another city the following day? We'll arrive in Santa Ana Airport and the shuttle or taxi costs $100. And I don't like to bother friends since it's late Sunday night. So if we can rent a car and then return it when we get home. It can help a lot. Please advise. And if you can give me some companies I can go to, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.
