I remember many years ago I talked with a Korean friend about the name of "Seoul", their capital. They wanted me to say "Seoul" instead of 汉城, because they regarded 汉城 as a historical symbol when Korea was affiliated with China. Since 汉城 was a name of then which reminded them the history, they told me that they did not use 汉城 anymore.
So now those claims that 首尔 is the real pronuciation of Seoul in Chinese is a pale excuse, and those comments that they did not want to use Chinese Characters at all are also without any basis.
Real reason of 汉城改名
