Your point is well taken. The positive about 6.4 is that it becomes a political landmark for China to cross while everyone in the world watches. It advanced China. It puts CCP in check where china would go next. It put CCP in such a political burden that internal politics has closely linked with 6.4.
CCP's history is kind of process of correcting. One leader gained political power by correcting his former boss's mistakes. 6.4 provided a perfect political opportunity for newcomers. So does FanLang gong issue.
In retrospect, if Jaing acted like Deng ( who broke his promise to Mao of not correct Culture Revolution) and ate his words to Deng and corrected 6.4 issue after Deng died, he would have been in a more comfortable position than where he is now.
