航綫和航司 用里程的人基本上是会 pay for subscription of services like Expert Flyer。你放下 alerts, 它如果 scan 到了 availability, 会马上 send alert 给你. Award seats are of very limited inventory, 商务舱绝大部份只有二个到四个位子。盯着 availability 的人非常多。因为非常僧多粥少，你慢一拍就没有了。
Cash 升级这个有，比如 卡塔尔航空 和英航会有，但是很少見於越洋長程，尤其是美国航司。倒是里程升级 UA 和 AA 会有. 但是！eligibility to upgrade 的 fares 是有限制的，就是 能够 upgrade 的 fares, 基本上比你平时慣常買的 coach fares 要高很多。这儿的朋友可能沒有什么概念 on Fare codes. 你可以去 UA 和 AA 的 program upgrade award 看看 requirements, 就知道什么一回事了。Fare codes also determine how many miles you may earn on the ticket/ qualify to count towards elite status, for example.
很多很多年前 航司会在 between 300 to 365 days ahead, release award seat inventory, 視乎那个航司用的訂位系统。AA 用的是极古老的 SABRE 只能有 300 天的advance. BA用的是 Amadeus 有 365 days 的 advance. 这就做成了很多 sought after 的 partner awards such as CX 的，by the time AA Flyer can book, 早就被 BA flyers booked 光了.
近几年來 這个300 to 365 days 的 practice 巳经很少存在。仍然存在的是 有些航司只会 release award seats 一次，不会再放出來，除非有人取消了他的 booking and the seat goes back to inventory. 但是！取消了的booking 那个位子不一定 return to inventory. 都是复杂的revenue management 軟件决定的。 有些航司会再放位子出來，如果它的軟件估计航班有位子剩下，那么它能從 award redemption 中，尤其是 from partner redemption 收回一些成本 对 offsetting fixed cost 有帮助。 國泰的香港美國航綫有很多条 尤其是头等舱很多时有位子 在飞前的几天到二十四小时都有机会放出來。AS 的里程用來飞这个极度化算。当然这个是几年前。在疫情前 CX 巳经是很不好的光境。在疫情重創之下 CX May never return back to what it was before! 它家的 777 現在都 leased to Qatar 了. 什么都没改只是换了 upholstery to Qatar 的酒红色。
忘了一个进階级的 point，在联盟里 很多外國航司的 programs 有 niche. 法航 土航 全日空 甚至 Virgin Atlantic 不是联盟 成員 但和一些航司是伙伴… 它们都各有一些 Sweet Spots. 会玩的人可以 get a lot of values.
个人覚得 应该了解 加航的 Aeroplan （Star Alliance) 和 英航的 (OneWorld)，因为这两个的里程相对容易通过轉点獲取 而且两个都有一些長处。

同樣的 US-EU AA Saaver 只要 57.5K, 但是 AA 近年基本不放 Saaver on its own metal. 用来订 BA 的 flight 呢 那个 surcharge 可以是 $700 多。（两个月前起了价）但是如果你找到 IB 去了馬德里 然后再買一張平机票去 倫敦呢？ IB 去 Madrid 的 surcharge 不到 $100。 再但是，如果你用 IB 和 BA Avios 去订呢？ IB/BA 有 Off Oeak 和 Peak. Off Peak from Miami is 42.5K, Pear 60K. Surcharge is cheaper.
再一个例子。我们需要在 Amman 去 Cairo 的 flight. Short flight in coach. UA is 8.8K $80+ 税 飞埃航。 BA is 6K $140+ 税 和 surcharge 飞 皇家约旦, AA is 17.5K $80+ 税 飞同樣的 皇家约旦！ 我現在是有 UA award 会在 31 days 免费取消的 deadline 再决定是否keep 这个，買机票 还是换 BA 的 award. 同樣的是 UA award 飞 埃航 Cairo to Aswan and Luxor back to Cairo. Booked award tickets but May replace them with pay tickets which actually have cheaper cost but completely lack flexibility.
